After 5 “Mission: Impossible” films, we’re forced to ask ‘is any mission really impossible for Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise)?’ I guess we’ll find out in the 6thinstalment, in which Hunt and team Luther (Ving Rhames), Benji (Simon Pegg), Alan (Alec Baldwin) and new addition Walker (Henry Cavill) attempt to prevent a global catastrophe.
Following the escape of Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), the team get caught up in battling terrorists, the CIA, assassins and former allies in a race against time to essentially save the planet from a nuclear blast. While they’re not called the “dream team” – they really should be, as their chemistry and compatible knowledge makes for one hell of an unbeatable force. Complications arise with newcomer Walker, and the return of Hunt’s former MI6 team-mate Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson), introducing an action-packed ride of car chases, twists and turns, helicopter pursuits and some pretty incredible skydiving.
Cruise, at 56, jumps and runs like a 20-something year old, which makes it all the more impressive seeing him conduct crazy stunts and get into lengthy fist fights with the enemy. There’s not too much difference between him and 35-year old Cavill, who by the way, is in great shape. Amirite ladies? I don’t know how it fits into this review, but the fight scenes in “Fallout” are so brutal and full on, people were actually laughing in the packed media screening. It was that uncomfortable “f**k that would’ve hurt” laugh, which really added to the realism of the film.
“Fallout” doesn’t have any unnecessary dialogue, which makes it stand out apart from its other counterparts this year. Where “Skyscraper” saw Dwayne Johnson narrate his every move, “Fallout” sees Cruise and pals conduct their mission without saying what doesn’t need to be said. It’s a testament to director Christopher McQuarrie, who is able to fill the narrative gaps with action and feeling, and thus creating a full story in which we are all fully engrossed.
You come to a “Mission: Impossible” movie to see the amazing stunts and action, right? This is where the movie really shines, as you’ll never know what anxiety truly is until you see this film. Sweaty palms say it all, and “Fallout” certainly delivers the goods. Not to mention the incredible scenery of places like Paris and London. Also a shoutout for the heart-felt moment with Luther and Ilsa. Cute.
McQuarrie has really come through with “Fallout”, and it’s more than a solid follow-up to 2015’s “Rogue Nation”. It’s cemented itself as one of 2018’s best, and even if you’re not generally a fan of action films (myself included!), there’s plenty to enjoy with this one.
