More Dogs for John Travolta

Thankfully, it’s not a sequel

When will John Travolta learn?

When will Jonathan Krane get that inevitable phone call?

The king of the Titanic duds has decided “Wild Hogs” is going to be so frickin’ fantastic – same guy who thinks “Lucky Numbers” was robbed at Golden Globe time – that he’s latched right onto its director, Walt Becker (the dude that directed “Van Wilder” is now Tarantino’s go-to man? Shit, what’s happened here JT?). Already, the duo has another film in the works… the curiously titled “Old Dogs”.

Travolta isn’t the pushover he sounds, though. Nope. He’s trying to convince the studio to also cast his wife Kelly Preston (who, by the day, he also wants to play Sue-Ellen in the “Dallas” movie alongside him) and daughter, Ella Blue, in the film.

David Diamond and David Weissman wrote the screenplay, which was originally titled “Old Dads.” Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it is understood to be a buddy comedy revolving around two guys who become middle-aged dads. Disney bought the project as a pitch in a seven-figure deal last summer, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Its anyone’s guess who they’ll get to play the second male lead… but it wouldn’t at all surprise me – if only because it’s Disney – if Tim Allen, Travolta’s “Wild Hogs” co-star, gets a look-in.

I love John Travolta. He thinks he’s great. He’s also one of the nicest guys I have ever met. I loved his performances in “Grease”, “Saturday Night Fever” and, of course, “Pulp Fiction” – but everything he’s done since being handed that comeback on a silver platter have been mouldy turds. Granted, “The General’s Daughter” was ‘OK’ and “Get Shorty” was good fun, but the strikeout ratio is definitely not in his favour these days. I just don’t think he cares anymore. I think he’s got enough money and is happy just lying about on any old set, eating and laughing and having a good time. Pity we have to suffer for it.

Hopefully – because I don’t think “Wild Hogs” is going to be that film – “Hairspray”, which reintroduces him to the genre he made his mark in; the musical, is the good stuff he so dearly needs.

Now THIS is the Travolta we want…
