Mortensen dumps Stewart for Superman?

Though the director himself stated that Viggo Mortensen was no longer in the running, Variety now claims that the “Lord of the Rings” star is indeed still in the mix to play a villain in Zack Snyder’s “Superman” reboot. Apparently Mortensen has dropped out of “Snow White and the Huntsman”, a contemporary rejig of the fairy tale starring Kristen Stewart, and is now available for “Superman”.

When news first surfaced of Mortensen’s potential involvement in the 2012 film, it was noted that the actor was likely being eyed to play General Zod, the Kryptonian rogue played by Terence Stamp in the original “Superman” movie series and more recently, Callum Blue in “Smallville”. And I think it’s safe to say that’s exactly who Mortensen would be playing.

Warner Bros would not comment on Mortensen’s rumoured casting but Snyder is said to be very keen to have the “History of Violence” star join the movie.

Earlier in the week it was revealed that “Carlos” star Edgar Ramirez was also up for an unspecified villain role in the film. Some have suggested he could be up for the part of Zod’s male sidekick Non, played by Jack O’Halloran in the original “Superman” films. If that’s the case, then we only need an Ursa to complete the casting of the Phantom Zone trio.

At the same time, Deadline mentioned a day or so back that Michael Shannon was up for a bad guy role in the film. Might this be Mortensen’s competition for Zod? If so, who do you like better?
