The latest “X-Men” flick is barely in theaters (in fact, it’s not – – there’s still a couple of days to go!) and director Bryan Singer is already thinking about when and where he’ll place his mutants next.
Firstly, he’s suggested that the follow-up to this week’s “X-Men : Apocalypse” could be set in space. Singer, who at one stage was considering remaking “Battlestar Galactica” for the big screen, says his love of spacely sci-fi movies is to blame for the idea.
“I imagine—and this is the first time I’ve actually answered the question this way—but another thing that’s been introduced in the comics is a big alien, interstellar tenant within the X-Men universe that hasn’t been explored”, Singer tells Fandango. “And to me, that might be kind of fun because I’m a huge Star Wars and Star Trek fan, and exploring the X-Men universe and being able to utilize that would be exciting, visually.”
It’s been speculated that Singer’s considering doing the Dark Phoenix storyline.
Singer’s also got some ideas for the long-in-the-works “X-Force” movie – that’s the spin-off that consists of The New Mutants and was created by half-cyborg mutant Cable. The group consists of such characters as Cannonball, Warpath, Wolfsbane, Wolverine and X-23.
Singer was asked (by Fandango) about rumours that he has suggested Fox use a female Wolverine, the aforesaid X-23, in the movie in lieu of retired mutant Hugh Jackman. “I have discussed that with the studio. I actually initially pitched the X-Force and the female.”
X-23, aka Laura Kinney, is “a female clone of Wolverine. Like Wolverine, X-23 has a regenerative healing factor, superhuman strength, senses, speed, agility, and reflexes. She also has retractable adamantium-coated bone claws in her hands and feet. In 2015, the character succeeded her “father” in adopting the name and costume of Wolverine in the series, All-New Wolverine”, according to Wikipedia. “Cloned from a damaged copy of Wolverine’s genome, X-23 was created to be the perfect killing machine. For years, she proved herself a capable assassin working for an organization called the Facility. A series of tragedies eventually led her to Wolverine and the X-Men. She attends school at the X-Mansion, and eventually became a member of X-Force.”
The first writer attached to “X-Force” was “Never Back Down” helmer Jeff Wadlow, with Simon Kinberg now said to be on it instead. At this stage, Singer isn’t attached to direct the “X-Force” movie just help formulate ideas for it (which will likely end up equating to a producer position).
