Party of Five returns – with a twist!

Freeform, the young adult channel that houses shows like “Pretty Little Liars” and “Switched at Birth”, have snagged the rights to old FOX fave “Party of Five” and are planning a reboot. There’s a catch though – Charlie, Bailey, Julia and the whiny one won’t be back. Not even Kristen. Or Justin. Or Sarah – because she already left for her own spin-off. Okay, clearly I know too much about “Party of Five”.

Between 1994 and 2000, “Party of Five” was the IT show. With that zippy theme song (see below), hot cast of newcomers – Matthew Fox, Scott Wolf, Neve Campbell, Lacey Chabert, a pre-“X-Men” James Marsden – and topical storylines, it was one of the most watched shows in dorm rooms. Or my girlfriend’s bedroom at the time, as it were in my case.

This new take, which will have an immigrant angle, was originally set up with NBC a few years back but the net had a similar show cooking so ultimately decided to pass. Do wonder though, especially since the original creators are involved and because audiences will be asking for it, whether they might take and entice one of the original cats back to scratch around in the new litter tray. Maybe Charlie’s hired to sit the Buendidas children?

In advance of today’s first-ever Freeform Summit event in Los Angeles, Disney’s young adult television network, today announced a put pilot commitment for a reboot of the fan-favorite “Party of Five” series with original creators Chris Keyser and Amy Lippman. From Sony Pictures Television, the reboot will follow the five Buendias children as they navigate daily life struggles to survive as a family unit after their parents are suddenly deported back to Mexico.

Keyser and Lippman will write the pilot with Rodrigo Garcia set to direct. “Party of Five” is created by Keyser and Lippman, who also serve as executive producers and writers. Garcia will also serve as executive producer and will direct the pilot. Michael Zebede serves as co-executive producer and writer.

The “Party of Five” reboot joins what’s seemingly a long line of reboots based on ’90s shows, including “Roswell” and “Charmed”.
