“Star Wars” icon Kenny Baker, the man behind R2-D2, has sadly made the move to Cloud City.
Kenny, 81, appeared in every “Star Wars” film – beginning with 1977’s “A New Hope”. With just a wobble or turn of the dome, the 3 feet 8 inches tall thesp was able to bring real humanity to a robot – one who’d go on to become one of the most loved in modern-day cinema.
“Kenny Baker was a real gentleman as well as an incredible trooper who always worked hard under difficult circumstances,” said George Lucas. “A talented vaudevillian who could always make everybody laugh, Kenny was truly the heart and soul of R2-D2 and will be missed by all his fans and everyone who knew him.”
Though a legend to “Star Wars” fans, Baker had also appeared in ”The Elephant Man” (1980), ”Time Bandits” (1981), and ”Willow” (1988).
Thanks Kenny. I owe a great part of my childhood to you. You may be gone, but your beeps will forever echo in my heart.
