Ridley Scott to direct, Leonardo DiCaprio to star in The Cartel

Ridley Scott is set to direct Fox’s adaptation of Don Winslow’s novel “The Cartel”, with Leonardo DiCaprio in line to star.

The news that Scott is directing comes today via THR, while a story at Deadline suggests Fox is courting DiCaprio to star.

Scott will also produce with his Scott Free Films president Michael Schaefer and Story Factory’s Shane Salerno. Salerno will pen the script.

Fox won the deal (which also includes the rights to Winslow’s 2006 novel “The Power of the Dog” – the precursor to “Cartel”) on Wednesday night, reportedly shelling out upwards of $6 million.

The book follows on from “The Power of the Dog”, telling the story of Art Keller and Adan Berrera, friends whose paths diverged when Keller went to work for DEA and Berrera joined the Sonora drug cartel. The book also fictionalizes the story of Sinoloa drug cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who was in the media recently for escaping from a Mexican prison.
