Ryan Reynolds cast as Detective Pikachu

Well this certainly is big news. The casting of the lead role in “Detective Pikachu” has been announced, with “Deadpool” star Ryan Reynolds getting the role.

The Hollywood Reporter has the news, reporting that Reynolds will join Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton in the Pokemon movie. Rod Letterman is directing the film, which is set to begin production in January.

While story details have been sparse so far, the report states that the lead detective, “Detective Pikachu” is a self-styled investigator. The story is kicked into gear when Smith’s character’s father is kidnapped, forcing the teen to team up with Pikachu in order to find him. Newton will play a sassy journalist who helps them on their quest.

Reynolds’ role is said to be motion-capture. Details regarding casting have been few and far between, but no doubt the addition of Reynolds will somewhat cement “Detective Pikachu” as a movie to watch out for.
