Sam Raimi on Ash vs. Evil Dead, returning to Spider-Man

Sam Raimi, back in the land of squeaking doors and corn syrup now (he has a new “Evil Dead” series hitting the air next year) that he’s lost his “Spider-Man” money-belt, was a special guest on Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist podcast this week and was typically honest and appreciably self-deprecating about some his past efforts.

First up, let’s talk about the upcoming stuff he spoke of. Raimi waxed on the “Ash vs. Evil Dead” series that premieres on Starz next year.

Of where the show takes place chronologically, the “Evil Dead” helmer says it’s not necessarily an “Army of Darkness” sequel.

“It takes place at a value mart. Bruce [Campbell] is still the stock boy.. only now he has incontinence issues. He’s still fighting the Evil Dead, he’s just a little older now.”

“I’m approaching it like [Ash] is the Clint Eastwood of monster fighters. He’s the Unforgiven of monster fighters. So I don’t like dwell into what happened in.. Josey Wales so much. It’s more like ‘That was years ago, yeah, I fought the monsters, now I’m kinda living the life I want to as a stock boy and I’m kind hiding out from them.’ But they come back, and that’s the reason the series starts. The monsters have come back and they want to tango with Bruce.”

In addition to recognizing the flaws of last year’s “Oz : The Great & Powerful”, Raimi took a knife to the stomach of the ill-fated “Spider-Man 3” calling it “Awful”.

It’s a movie that just didn’t work very well. I tried to make it work, but I didn’t really believe in all the characters, so that couldn’t be hidden from people who loved Spider-Man. If the director doesn’t love something, it’s wrong of them to make it when so many other people love it. I think [raising the stakes after Spider-Man 2] was the thinking going into it, and I think that’s what doomed us. I should’ve just stuck with the characters and the relationships and progressed them to the next step and not tried to top the bar …Spider-Man_3,_International_Poster

Raimi says he’d like to do a western and, in particular, a heist movie. But more interestingly, he said he’d be keen to return to the “Spider-Man” universe if he felt he could bring something to it.
