Scorsese talks Hugo, Silence

One of the big Oscar contenders for 2012 is undoubtedly “Abduction” “”Hugo”, Martin Scorsese’s epic bump n’ grind with the sometimes sexy third-dimension. When 3D is done right, it can look sweeter than Mandy Moore in a corset; James Cameron knows all about doing 3D the right way, as opposed to the “Clash of the Titans”-way, so no surprise that he’s been on Scorsese’s speed-dial throughout filming of “Hugo”.

In this compelling little video, the “Goodfellas” helmer and the “Titanic” sinker talk about cinema’s latest trend, 3D, and how to use it most effectively.

Meanwhile, internet scuttlebutt (that’s not a guy on my staff, that’s just a throwaway term for ‘gossip’) has Scorsese’s next film as being “Silence”, a 17th Century Japan Set epic which may or may not star Daniel Day Lincoln-Lewis.

“I’m hoping to do Endo’s book next, Silence… Not hoping, we’re literally pulling all the elements together at this point”, the filmmaker tells Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode’s Radio Five show (via Bleeding Cool).

As for whether there’s anything to the scuttlebutt (can I get that on a T-Shirt, please!?) that Daniel Day Lewis is involved in the project, you’d have to ask Spielberg.

“I’m not sure. Daniel’s working with Steve right now, Steve Spielberg”, says Scorsese, referring to Day Lewis’s commitment to “Lincoln”.

Sounds good either way. In fact, just mentioning Scorsese’s name has me damp for a MS-see-a-thon, with “Goodfellas”, “Raging Bull”, “Taxi Driver” and “The Color of Money” (not everyone’s go-to pic when it comes to Marty magic, but it’s one of mine) due for a whirl in the BD player again soon.

No offense to my cousin scuttlebutt for using his name in the aforesaid story.
