Sequel News : Bridesmaids 2, Horrible Bosses 2, Star Trek 2, Dragon Tattoo 2, Sweeney 2

Bridesmaids 2

Kristen Wiig isn’t interested in doing a sequel to her pre-nuptials comedy hit, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be one. Universal are considering doing a sequel to last year’s hit comedy without the film’s star and co-writer. It’s been reported that Wiig was cheated out of quite a bit of money by the studio, who only offered the cast, which also includes Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper, a $100,000 bonus when the film started to break box-office records; yep, pretty lousy ‘thank you’. Uni are said to be looking at possibly structuring the sequel around rising comedienne Melissa McCarthy’s loud, plump bridesmaid character. “We are talking to filmmakers now about concepts, and if the right one emerges, we’ll move forward”, a source for Uni said. Horrible Bosses 2

Screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein and Stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis are onboard a sequel to the 2011 comedy. Seth Gordon is in early talks to resume his position as director. No word on who’ll be playing the nasty employers of the sequel (Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell and Kevin Spacey played the ‘Horrible Bosses’ of the title first-time around) but one would imagine Bateman, Day and Sudeikis’s characters come up against new, intolerable employers. Star Trek 2

“Sherlock” and “Hobbit” star Benedict Cumberbatch has snagged a plum role in director J.J Abram’s “Star Trek” sequel, while “Doctor Who” star Noel Clarke is also beaming onboard the film. Though Cumberbatch’s role hasn’t been announced, it’s believed that he could be playing the role of the main villain – the same part Benicio Del Toro was offered and more recently, Edgar Ramirez was rumoured for (THR). Clarke, will “play a family man with a wife and young daughter”, according to Variety. The sequel to the 2009 hit features Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the ‘Enterprise’ gang, as well as new franchise additions Peter Weller (“Robocop”), Alice Eve (“She’s Out of My League”) and Tom Archdeacon (“Days of Our Lives”).

The Girl Who Played with Fire

Despite only average takings at the box office, Sony’s U.S “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” remake will get a sequel. Steven Zaillian, who also wrote and executive produced “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” is writing the sequel, which Sony hopes David Fincher will return to direct. Stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are contractually obliged to do the film. The sequel hits cinemas 2013. (TheWrap)

The Sweeney 2

Nick Lowe is already planning a sequel to “The Sweeney”, the feature film adaptation of the old TV series with Ray Winstone and Ben Drew (aka singer Plan B) playing detectives Jack Regan and George Carter. The movie sequel could be a sequel showing how Regan and Carter met; it’s also going to be more international in flavour. (RTE)
