Sly, Russell confirmed for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2

Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone were confirmed as cast members for next year’s “Guardians & the Galaxy Vol.2” at the film’s panel at San Diego Comic Con today.

The “Tango & Cash” duo play Ego, the Living Planet (and Star-Lord’s father!) and a Nova Corps member, respectively.

Deadline reports : James Gunn oversaw the Guardians presentation like a carnival barker or a reigning NBA champ returning to his hometown after winning the title. Chatty, confident and as loose as a game show host, he was joined onstage by stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Michael Rooker, and to the massive delight of everyone attending, Russell himself.

Before the trailer the Guardians crew debuted the first footage from the film, a full scene featuring Yondu (Rooker) and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) escaping from a jail cell in what looks like a massive space station with the help of Baby Groot (that’s what they’re calling him this time out). The scene makes it clear Guardians 2 is leaning far more heavily on the “13” part of PG-13, with an impressive body count courtesy of Yondu’s whistle-controlled projectile.

It’s a great scene, but it was very overshadowed by the trailer.

In a nutshell, the trailer makes it clear Guardians 2 is aiming to be everything you loved about Guardians 1 but even more. It kicks off with plenty of interplay between the main characters, still jelling as a team as the film takes place just a few months after the first one but definitely very much a unit. It then turns to listing off just who is in the film, confirming the numerous casting announcements and rumors, most notably Stallone, dressed as a member of Nova Corps, followed by Russell.

I’ll wait for the trailer rather than spoil the whole thing, but the final moments must be discussed. After revealing that Russell is playing Ego The Living Planet, the scene changes to a comedic moment in which Ego explains to Star Lord how he took human form by meticulously re-creating every cell and function with a few extra flourishes, out of curiosity about how humanoids live and more importantly reproduce.

Drax then asks, “Did you make a penis?” which moritifies Star Lord. To which Ego says, “I sure did… it’s not bad either.”

“Guardians Vol.2” hits theaters May 5, 2017.
