Spider-Man sequel : Watts returns, Gwen Stacy introduced

“Spider-Man : Homecoming” director Jon Watts is officially back at the helm of the next film in the sticky series, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige confirmed the filmmaker’s reprisal when he called into Brazil’s Comic-Con (via Screen Rant) today during the Marvel panel.

Watts did a knockout job with Marvel Studios’ first live-action “Spider-Man” film – and kudos to him for selecting the right mugs for the roles, too – so no surprise, really, to hear the hub wants him back for the next. It’s safe, too.

While there have been unsolidified reports of Mobius and Blade appearing in the “Spider-Man : Homecoming” sequel, it seems more likely that we’ll see fan fave Gwen Stacy. An audition tape has leaked that suggests the role of Peter Parker’s [other] love interest is up for grabs. French actress Louna Fournier is on the tape, suggesting that this Gwen could be a foreigner – think ‘foreign exchange student’. That’s a radical departure from the incarnation of Stacy from the comics (and the films – “Spider-Man 3” and “The Amazing Spider-Man”), but Marvel and Watts seem intent on straying from the other “Spider-Man” movies where possible, so no surprise to see they’re going in a new direction with the Gwen Stacy character.
