Does ABC have plans for a Star Wars TV show?

Is a primetime “Star Wars” TV show coming to ABC? According to ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey, it could be.

“Oh, as a fan, I would absolutely love to say ‘Yes,’” Dungey said at the TCA press tour when asked whether she wants a primetime series based on the franchise that’s owned by ABC’s parent company Disney. “We have had conversations with [Lucasfilm] and will continue to have conversations with them. I think it would be wonderful if we could find a way to extend that brand into our programming… It’s all a little bit hush-hush… [Talks] are ongoing. We don’t have an official timeline yet.” (Via EW).

Of course, two “Star Wars” TV shows are already on air. “Star Wars Rebels” is about to go into its third season on Disney XD, with the first season of “LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures” also currently airing on the channel.

The difference? These shows are animated, and while Dungey wouldn’t comment on the nature of the proposed ABC show, we could only image that, given ABC’s current style and tone, their show would be live-action.

If the network can get the show off the ground, hopefully it will do better than Lucasfilm producer Rick McCallum’s attempt to develop a live-action “Star Wars” TV series some years ago now. Set between the original “Star Wars” film trilogy and the prequels, fifty scripts were written however the project never made it to the screen as it was deemed too expensive.
