Beloved cartoon character “Tintin” will hit the big screen – finally, after many years of talk – in 2009; courtesy Dreamworks, according to SneakPeek.CA.
Herge Studios, Tintin’s Belgian papa, handed over the film rights to the popular character in 1983 to Steven Spielberg. The uber-director recently renewed the option.
The film will now enter its pre-production phase, with Nick Rodwell of Hergé adding that “if movie No. 1 works, we will continue.”
Drunken Captain Haddock – who utters strings of exclamatory curses like “billions of bilious blue blistering barnacles – Professor Cuthbert Calculus, the investigator twins Thomson and Thompson and Tintin’s faithful little dog Snowy are all expected to feature in the film.
Though casting rumours are obviously about as solid as melted ice cream, there have been a couple in recent years. One existing report said Spielberg had his eye on “Everwood” star Gregory Smith there for a while; whilst another report (said to be BS) mentioned “Harry Potter” star Rupert Grint had been earmarked for the role. Newcomer Kirsten Myburgh has also been rumoured for the part. I personally doubt any of those chaps will end up playing the redheaded adventurer – if only because they’ll all be too damn old by the time the film gets up.
Another little rumour that surfaced a while back was that Roman Polanksi was considering doing his own “Tintin” movie. I think it’s pretty safe to say that’s a shovel-load of horse excrement.
