Trailer: The Legend of Tarzan

There’s been a massive influx of classic fairy tale adaptations in Hollywood over the past few years. Disney has the live-action remake of “The Jungle Book” hitting theaters alongside the Warner Bros. sequel “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” in April, and there’s plenty more to come this year. But also with the later studio’s upcoming slate of adaptations, “The Legend of Tarzan” seems to be another major investment. This new second trailer shows more of the dark, moody adventure that audiences have been drowned in lately. But that’s not to say that it doesn’t look enticing.

The director of the acclaimed “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”, David Yates, is commanding the project. And that’s definitely a smart move by the studio to use an established, mature director like Yates to tackle this. Supporting him is an equally stellar cast; Margot Robbie, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson costar with Alexander Skarsgard as the title character. So there is a lot going for this film and by the footage given in the trailers, it’s possible we could be getting a surprisingly great adventure film.

But considering last year’s fantasy-retelling misfire “Pan”, it remains to be seen how this one fairs in the end. Even so, at least the trailers are more promising than what other films of its kind have had, not to mention the superb cast that’s involved. And if this one does in fact do well critically (but especially financially), we could be seeing sequels, spinoffs, and maybe even a cinematic universe at some point. But let’s stay grounded for the time being.

“The Legend of Tarzan” swings into theaters on July 1. Check out the thrilling new trailer above.
