Transformers: box office + future movies

If a “Transformers” film screens, and no one is there to watch it, did it really happen? The answer is moot, as they’ll keep making the damn things anyway.

Initial box office reports for the “Transformers: The Last Knight” movie look grim, with Deadline reporting it to post the lowest stateside start in the series, with $15m on opening day. Personally, I’d be happy with $15m for a day’s work, but if “Transformers” wants to continue the momentum to hit 14 films, then it’s got to lift its game. The five-day tally is forecast at $63-65M, which is lower than Paramount is expecting.

The film reportedly cost $217M to make, so overseas markets might be what saves “The Last Knight”. Hopefully Marky Mark is enough to get punters to attend, despite the fact he says he won’t be back for more robot action. Neither will director Michael Bay, who is bowing out following the fifth movie.

In spinoff news, “Last Knight” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has revealed that the “Bumblebee” movie is set to begin production in August, with a release date expected for next summer. ScreenRant have the exclusive from  di Bonaventura, also noting that “Transformers 6” will follow in the summer of 2019. He also spoke about future movies, stating that due to the cost of making the movies, there has to be an audience. So to loop back to my question above – it might not happen if no one is there to see it.

As previously reported, “Bumbleebee” will be a prequel and set in the 1980s, so if this latest installment sucks then maybe the yellow robot himself can save the franchise.
