Universal is developing a remake of the 1932 film “The Mummy”, but word is the studio may change the monster’s gender.
According to THR, director Alex Kurtzman and writer Jon Spaihts have two story options, one featuring a male mummy and one featuring a female mummy. The outlet reports the gender of the titular monster will depend on casting, which is expected to happen in the next few months.
The original “The Mummy” film was released in 1932 and starred Boris Karloff in the title role. The film was remade in 1999 starring Arnold Vosloo. Universal’s upcoming remake (which is set to release on March 24, 2017) will be set in the modern day and is the first film in the studio’s planned series of interconnected monster projects. Universal hopes to build a franchise out of the classic monster films, with other monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, the Bride of Frankenstein and vampire hunter Van Helsing available to the studio.
