An original Saw character was considered for Spiral

“Spiral : From the Book of Saw” has, like so many other films, been delayed as a result of the pandemic.

Co-writer Josh Stolberg, who penned the script with his partner Pete Goldfinger, spoke to The Production Meeting about the film’s delay.

“the closer we got to it, the more I actually worried that we were going to open”, Stolberg says of the film and it’s original May 15, 2020 release date. “The worse case scenario is that you open and nobody comes because nobody’s wanting to come out into the movie theater.

“This is one of my favourite films that I’ve worked on – Chris Rock is incredible and to be able to write lines for Sam Jackson is on another planet. So i was really hoping that the film would open in a theater. I’m willing to wait – and i hope the fans are willing to wait for a year too, because that’s what it’s gonna be.”

Jackson plays Rock’s father in the film, a role fans have speculated might have been originally written for original “Saw” star Danny Glover, serving as connecting tissue for the franchise.

The idea of having Glover reprise his role as Detective David Tapp in the new film was briefly considered, says Stolberg.

“I think for a little while that we played around with the idea that Chris (Rock’s character) was related to that character in some way. You would be doing a great disservice to your career if you didn’t think about that at least once – while you’re doing a reboot or rather a continuation. But at the end of the day it just didn’t pass the smell test.”

“Spiral : From the Book of Saw” is currently scheduled to open May 21, 2021.
