Andy Serkis, the mo-cap wiz who has become sort-of a go-to guy for studio tentpoles since his contribution to Peter Jackson’s groundbreaking “Lord of the Rings” films, is rumored to be up for a key role in director Matt Reeves’ “The Batman”.
It’s believed the role wouldn’t require Serkis, who recently participated in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, to wear green dots all over his head with the unidentified role said to be that of a token human character.
And which role is that? Nobody knows, though it’s speculated the actor could be the film’s Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin.
The character, along with Catwoman and The Riddler, are believed to be in the film so there’s that. Josh Gad had put his hat in the ring to play the classic villain, but announced earlier this week that he won’t be filling the spot.
No surprise that Serkis would be on the director’s wish-list for any role in the film, considering he and Reeves collaborated on the recent “Planet of the Apes” movies, but as Batman on Film reiterate, this is still a rumor and should only be considered as such (at least until they wheel Serkis out on stage at Comic-Con to announce his anointment as the Batman villain).
This version of The Penguin, says the aforesaid site, is believed to have been written as a straight-up Corleone-like crime boss. Producers were said to be looking for someone about 20 years younger than 55-year-old Serkis, but I suppose they could’ve rejigged the part to fit?
Some of the better-known versions of The Penguin on screen include Burgess Meredith’s take in the ’60s “Batman” and Danny De Vito’s portrayl in 1992’s “Batman Returns”.
“The Batman”, said to be the first in a new trilogy that pits Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne against a ‘rogue’s gallery’ of villains, is set for a summer 2021 release.
