Caffeinated Clint
Hot on the heels of – a rather surprising (but again, nothing is too surprising in these crazy times) – Sony’s announcement that they’ve offloaded Tom Hanks starrer “Greyhound” to AppleTV to launch (instead of waiting for theaters to open), a new rumor has hit suggesting the fledgling streaming platform is on the hunt for a bucket of movies to align their categories.
“Greyhound”, set in the early days of World War II as an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by Capt. Ernest Krause (Hanks), crosses the treacherous North Atlantic while being hotly pursued by wolf packs of Nazi submarines, was originally set for a wide theatrical release in June. The AppleTV premiere will mark the first time one of the Oscar winner’s movies has gone direct-to-digital.
Though undoubtedly their biggest acquisition to date, “Greyhound” joins an impressive list of movies Apple has acquired in recent times that includes “Beastie Boys Story” and “The Banker”.
While Apple were intent on only producing originals, seems the fierce competition – largely from Netlix and Hulu – has forced them to reconsider their stance on picking up older movies to fatten up their offerings. Bloomberg says Apple are eyeing older films and TV shows that they can license, but it’s not known which studios catalog they’re chasing.
