UPDATED: Beetlejuice 2 : It’s (NOT?) ON!

UPDATE: MTV has confirmed, through a statement from Burton’s rep, that “Beetlejuice 2” is actually NOT in development. Apparently the director didn’t give the statement after all. Read the original story below:

After umpteen years of discarded treatments (“Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian” anyone?), rumours and sluggish umming and aahring, “Beetlejuice” director Tim Burton has confirmed that the long-simmering sequel to the 1988 hit is about to get underway.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Burton confirmed that the script for the film – penned by Seth Grahame-Smith -has been given the thumbs up, and it’s pages will be before the camera shortly. Even after his recent comeback, Michael Keaton is still onboard to reprise the Ghost with the Most, while Winona Ryder’s also a lock to bring cinema’s original emo child, Lidia back to the silver screen.

”The film is a go and has been approved by the Warner Bros. team, we have talked with the cast members we wanted for the film and they are all on board, this includes both Winona and Michael. We have the script in hand everything is in place all we need to do now is get ready to start filming.”

Geena Davis told us a couple of years back that – despite the impossibility of resurrecting her character, an ageless Ghost – that she wanted in on a sequel, should it ever happen. Well, seems the time’s ripe get your agent on the blower, Geen.
