Ben Stiller may direct Downey in Pinocchio

Is Tim Burton off “Pinocchio”, the live-action take on the fairytale favourite?

Seems so.

Robert Downey Jr, long attached to play Geppetto and the one who actually got Disney to greenlight the project, tells Sky Italia that Burton is off and his “Tropic Thunder” co-star and director Ben Stiller is his choice to replace him.

(Stiller mightn’t seem a likely choice, but his “Secret Life of Walter Mitty” remake is apparently sweeter than a tin of sugar-coated humbugs, so he might just be capable of handling something a little less over-the-top than “Tropic Thunder” and “The Cable Guy”. )

While Downey doesn’t say why Burton’s not longer involved it might simply be a case of the filmmaker having a clash or a busy dance card.

Penned by “Heroes” alum Bryan Fuller and rewritten by Jane Goldman, “Pinocchio” tells of Gepetto (Downey Jr) going in search of his wooden boy turned human creation, Pinocchio.
