Thank you “Wonder Woman”, thank you. Now, the numbskulls at Hollywood – who begrudgingly seemed to show no interest in female-skewed superheroes (c’mon, “Catwoman” was fifteen years ago – get over it!) – seems ready to embrace the superheroine movie.
Thanks to the gazillion ingots Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” made at the box office- and deservedly so, it was a very solid move – some of the previously dormant superhero properties, headlined by female crime-fighters, seem to be inching forward.
Most notably, the long-long-long-long-long awaited “Black Widow’ solo movie, starring Scarlett Johansson as the (supporting) character she’s played in a whole bunch of Marvel movies since “Iron Man 2”, seems to be finally coming to fruition. There’s always been lukewarm interest on the studio end, but after the success of “Wonder Woman”, Marvel seems to have developed more of a woody for the project. According to Heat Vision, Marvel has tapped Jac Schaeffer to pen the project. Schaeffer is one of the big up-and-comers on the writing circuit, with the upcoming “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and “The Shower” to his name.
Ironically, as the trade points out, the news of a “Black Widow” movie comes hot on the heels of the trailer for Jennifer Lawrence’s Russian Spy flick “Red Sparrow”, which could be easily be mistaken for a Black Widow origin flick.
Also on the ‘Ladies of Marvel’ front, “X-Men” character Kitty Pryde (played by Ellen Page in the earlier films) looks to be getting her own solo jaunt.
According to Collider, “Deadpool” director has been working on the film with Fox, but the outlet stresses that with the buyout of Fox looming, Disney might decide to discard it.
If the film goes ahead, it’d also Colussus, who also appeared in “Deadpool”, as Kitty’s love interest.
The projects join fellow female-led comic book movies “Gotham City Sirens” (with Margot Robbie reprising her popular Harley Quinn role from the not-so-popular “Suicide Squad”), Joss Whedon’s “Batgirl” and the “Wonder Woman” sequel on the marquee over the next couple of years.
