“Charm City Kings” director Angel Manuel Soto has been tapped to helm the first-ever superhero movie starring a Latino lead.
Soto and writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (the upcoming “Scarface” remake) are teaming to bring DC Films and Warner Bros’ “Blue Beetle” to the big (ahem, we hope) screen.
“It is an honor to direct Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC,” said Soto in a statement to TheWrap, who had the scoop. “I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.”
The film will fix on the Jamie Reyes version of the character. Reyes is the third character to assume the mantle of Blue Beetle, but he is substantially different from his predecessors. A teenager without any real superheroes when he starts out (though it’s later revealed he’s alien in origin), Reyes quickly forms a working relationship with Kord’s former teammate and best friend Booster Gold and is inducted into the Teen Titans and the Justice League.
A fall production start has been earmarked.
