Casting news : Fox News flick; Joker; Top Gun: Maverick; Doctor Sleep; Buffaloed

Annapurna’s film about the women of Fox News is shaping up to be an A-list affair, with Margot Robbie the next big name to join the cast. Robbie is in talks to join Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman in the movie, which centres on the women who took on the toxic male culture of the news network and chief Roger Ailes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Theron will take on the role of former host Megyn Kelly, while Kidman will portray Gretchen Carlson. Robbie will play an associate producer at the news network.

The film is yet untitled, and other characters are likely to include former anchor Greta Van Susteren, media mogul Rupert Murdoch and fired host Bill O’Reilly.

Bryan Callen is the latest name to join the “Joker” origin flick, who has announced himself as part of the cast as an “aging dancer, stripper”. He will join recently announced Marc Maron, lead Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro and Frances Conroy in the flick.

Callen stated on the Fighter and the Kid podcast: “I’m doing the Joker. I was offered a part. That’ll be fun, but I think it’s only a couple days. Play an aging dancer, stripper. I don’t want to go into the details. I can’t go into the details, but just know it’s gonna be good. And I hope my psoriasis is flaring cause that’ll be very funny. I’ll be in a Speed-O, I can’t wait. I have some ideas for it.”

Glen Powell is headed into the danger zone, nabbing a role in “Top Gun: Maverick”, the sequel to the 1986 classic. Word is that Powell original auditioned for the role of Goose’s son, but lost out to Miles Teller. The role he’s been cast in is being kept under wraps.

Joseph Kosinski is directing the film, which also stars Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer and Jennifer Connelly. It’s set for a July 12, 2019 release. Via THR.

”The Shining” sequel “Docter Sleep” is beefing up its cast with Carl Lumbly and Alex Essoe new additions. Lumbly will play Dick Halloran, and Essoe will play Wendy Torrence in the follow up film to Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining”, based on the Stephen King novel

Mike Flanagan is at the helm of the film, which also stars Ewan McGregor as Danny Torrance, and Rebecca Ferguson as Rose the Hat – head of a cult that feeds on the “steam” created by young people who have a touch of the “shining.”

According to the Deadline report, “Doctor Sleep” begins as Torrance carries the trauma of the Overlook Hotel into adulthood. He’s become a reflection of his murderous father, with lingering rage and a drinking problem that dulls his pain as well as his “shining” powers. Those powers return when he embraces sobriety and uses his gift to help the dying at a hospice. He establishes a psychic connection with a young girl who shares his extreme abilities and is being targeted by a scary group with similar abilities. They’ve found that their powers grow if they inhale the “steam” that comes off others with the power to shine, when they are suffering painful deaths.

Judy Greer will join Zoey Duetch in indie comedy-drama “Buffaloed”, reports Deadline. Tanya Wexler is directing the film, which is set in the underworld of debt collecting and follows homegrown hustler Peg Dahl (Deutch), who will do anything to escape Buffalo, NY. After getting into some trouble, she finds herself crippled by debt, and with her chances of a brighter future outside of her hometown squandered, she decides to become a debt collector herself and wages war with the city’s debt-collecting “kingpin.”

Greer will play Kathy, Peg’s single mother, who is harassed by people trying to get back at Peg. Deutch is also producing the film. Greer can next be seen in the “Halloween” sequel.
