While a scrotum-less hobgoblin will likely get laid before it ever sees the light of day, producers on the long-gestating “Highlander” reboot have found another dupe to add to it’s musty IMDB page.
According to Heat Vision, “John Wick” co-director Chad Stahelski has signed with Lionsgate to tackle the redo of Russell Mulcahy’s classic.
For the under 21’s in our audience, “Highlander” starred ‘80s icon Christopher Lambert as an immortal Scottish swordsman who must confront the last of his immortal opponents, played a scenery-chewing Clancy Brown. Sean Connery played Lambert’s mentor, who took him in after his first death in the 16th century. The flick, though a good time and boasting some fun effects, is probably best regarded for it’s music, with the tunes provided by the legendary Queen.
Umpteen years after some shitty sequels and an OK TV series, the producers decided it was time to press the restart button on the franchise. Lambert sighed, Connery smiled, and fans forever waited – like an immortal longing to meet his maker – for something official. It never really comes.
While likely to be a unique interpretation in the least, this “Highlander” redo – the first since “Highlander Endgame”– has been in development for a good decade or so. In addition to numerous actors who’ve flirted with the Connor Macleod role (and last year Dave Bautista was said to be attached to play the villain), more than a few filmmakers have come and gone from it – including Justin Lin, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Cedric Nicolas-Troyan attached at points.
Seems everything that came before will be tossed out – most notably, previous drafts of the script with Stahelski and as yet-to-be-hired writer penning something fresh (well, as fresh as a remake of a solid ‘80s film can be).
Neal H.Moritz and Peter Davis remain onboard as the project’s long-suffering producers.
Sensibly, Lionsgate have yet to announce a start date for “Highlander”.
