Could Joaquin Phoenix be the next Joker?

We’ve heard the news that a Joker origin movie is on the cards, with Todd Phillips assigned to pen the script for Warner Bros. Whispers were circling that Leonardo DiCaprio could be in contention for the role, taking over Jared Leto’s “Suicide Squad” Joker, but now talks are that Joaquin Phoenix is being sought after by the studio.

The word from Variety is that no negotiations have been started, but that Phillips has made it clear that Phoenix is top choice for the role of the Clown Prince of Crime. Of course no comment from WB.

As this spinoff lies outside of the DC Universe, Leto is still attached to the Joker role for the “Suicide Squad” films, and the new film will have no effect on any further DC Universe films. The Joker origin film would fall under the DC Comics umbrella, which also allows the studio the opportunity to explore other iconic comic-book characters.

The Joker origin story will look into what happened for the Joker to become a mastermind criminal. Sources say the story will take place in the ’80s and have more of the look of a gritty crime drama than comic-book movie. Scott Silver is now also on board to co-write alongside Phillips.
