Just days after it was revealed Warner Bros were still keen on being in the Mel Gibson business, even after those transgressions have come to light, the actor’s “Lethal Weapon” co-star says the long-awaited fourth instalment in the series is still very much a real possibility.
Danny Glover, set to reprise his Roger Martaugh role opposite Gibson’s Martin Riggs, tells Variety that the new film – when and if it happens – will encompass a very strong, timely storyline.
“I can only tell you, if it does happen, there is something extraordinary in it. If “Lethal Weapon” gives us some sort of contribution to understanding a little bit more…It would be interesting to do.”
Glover, 73, said he hasn’t had a conversation about it with anyone since January but at last glance, the script “I found the plot had very strong relevance to some of things that are happening today. I can say that”.
“It would be interesting to see how we take this within the political framework we are in; the economic framework that we are in. And especially that framework as opposed to the communities that have been affected by the kind of police violence, the kind of police standards, and the power that they exert as well. And what would be interesting from that vantage point is what that attempt could be like at this particular moment. And maybe it will attempt to confront the issue head on, within whatever script comes out”.
In March last year, Moviehole exclusively reported that Gibson, Glover and even Joe Pesci were being sought for a fifth “Lethal Weapon”. The script, we were advised, was a winner.
The 4th film in the franchise was over 20 years ago in 1998, so it’s been a long wait for fans of the iconic duo, but producer Dan Lin has delivered an update on the new film earlier this year suggesting the boys are good to go again. Lin appeared on a Producers Roundtable for The Hollywood Reporter and provided the exciting update:
“We’re trying to make the last Lethal Weapon movie. And Dick Donner’s coming back. The original cast is coming back. And it’s just amazing. The story is very personal to him. Mel and Danny are ready to go, so it’s about the script.”
“Lethal Weapon” series director Richard Donner recently turned 90 so it’s unlikely he’d be at the helm of the new film but hopefully he still gets involved.
