Daredevil axed! Whaaat!?

Something’s definitely up at Netflix… or Marvel… or at the office they previously shared.

Latest small-screen superhero series to get the axe is Daredevil – which comes as a surprise, considering it’s probably the most popular of the shows that fit the streamer’s sub-genre offerings – which, the network announced today, won’t be back for a fourth season.

The cancellation follows the demise of two other Marvel/Netflix collaborations, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, which were recently given pink-slips.

“‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ will not return for a fourth season on Netflix. We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note,” Netflix said in a statement.

Nup, don’t believe it. Something is definitely up. No way would the home of “Fuller House” so freely start axing all their Marvel shows unless… something had gone funky with that relationship. If the two remaining Marvel shows, “Jessica Jones” and “The Punisher”, are also ditched – we’ll know for sure that’s the case. What’s most likely going on is Marvel are bringing these characters to Disney’s new streaming service next year – either the same shows, with the same leads, or new incarnations, with new casts – but rather than having Netflix admit the truth, and thus the streamer ruining their shot with the mega-studio forever, they’ve opted to go with a more general excuse for dismissal.

“While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come” said Netflix.

What they also let slip in the statement is that “the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel” – which is a bit of a ‘duh’, obviously, considering Matt Murdock will always be a part of some medium (even if it’s just comics), but in this case, I’d say Netflix are sneakily letting us know that Marvel have their own Daredevil project in the works elsewhere. Already.
