DC Films have been looking forward of late, working on what is next following the success of films such as “Aquaman” and “Joker”, and the upcoming “Wonder Woman 1984” and “Birds of Prey” being highly anticipated.
“The Batman” is getting a shake-up with a new actor donning the mask (Robert Pattinson), and new faces playing Riddler (Paul Dano), Penguin (Colin Farrell), and Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz).
But what’s the deal with Superman? The character has been rebooted twice in 13 years, with Brandon Routh (“Superman Returns”) and later with Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”). It hasn’t become a winning formula for DC as yet though, with even the follow-up “Justice League” bombing at the box office.
Word is that there have been plenty of meetings at Warner Bros., including one with Michael B. Jordan discussing playing the superhero. Per Variety, Jordan isn’t ready to commit to taking on the project since filming doesn’t seem likely to happen for several years and he has a full dance card of projects. Insiders think that a new Superman film is unlikely to hit screens before 2023, given that there’s no script and no director attached.
There’s also opportunity for DC to launch into the realm of R-rated superhero films: something Marvel has steered clear of.
“There’s a huge appetite for R-rated superhero movies and if Marvel isn’t going to step up, that presents an opening for DC to tap into that audience,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations.
So what’s next? “Green Lantern Corps” remains a priority, the script expected at the end of this year. Ezra Miller’s “Flash” is still going ahead, as well as “Batgirl”.
Oh, and the Snyder Cut of “Justice League” remains a priority for those on the internet.
