Deputy Dewey returns for another Scream!

Best news of the day right here.

Seems this “Scream” reboot isn’t a shoddy MTV-style reshaping after all – and I suppose the first indication that it was never going to be was the inclusion of “Ready or Not” filmmakers Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett to the call sheet.

But color me surprised to hear that the film isn’t so much a restart as it is the fourth sequel in the original series of films – just re-energized with some Trump, i-tech and ‘tardy sequel’ gags, no doubt  And if their previous horror outing is anything to go by, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett will have that laughs to horror ratio balanced perfectly.

We heard a few days back that Neve Campbell has been contacted about reprising her role as Sidney Prescott in the film, which is set up at Spyglass (The Weinsteins’, of course, produced the previous films under their Dimension banner).

Now, word that David Arquette has officially signed on to reprise his role as Deputy “Dewey” Riley in the film.

”I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my ‘Scream’ family, old and new,” Arquette said in a statement released to Variety. “‘Scream’ has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.”

Arquette’s inclusion, and Campbell being contacted, suggest that several other original cast members could also be included.

No doubt that was one thing Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original ’90s classic, insisted on – linkage to the Wes Craven quadrilogy.

“I’m excited to reteam with David and work with Jamie, Guy and Radio Silence on the next ‘Scream,’” Williamson, who will executive produce, said. “Their take on the movie is both original, inventive and honors Wes’ legacy in a wonderful way. ‘Ready or Not’ was my favorite horror film of last year and I can’t wait to see what their amazing talents bring to the ‘Scream’ universe. I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”

Filming is going to kick off in “Dawson’s Creek” country, Wilmington, N.C sometime later in the year – with the production already prepping those Corona-proof precautions.
