Disney axes Die Hard prequel

When Fox moved into Sleeping Beauty’s castle a couple of months back, they were informed in advance there’d be no room for the 300 or so film projects they wanted to bring along. As such, Disney has canceled over three-quarters of those films – most of which were, at least, still a ways off going into production.

Among the 270-odd films revealed to be canned, a number of sequels and prequels – Len Wiseman’s “Die Hard” prequel the most prominent.

The “Live Free or Die Hard” Helmer was expected to return to the series for “McClane”, an origin story about the NYPD officer who would go onto become the hero we know from the 1988 film. Bruce Willis would’ve returned for the prequel, as the action would flick back and forwards between the past and present. A number of younger names were being spitballed as the ‘70s incarnation of young John.

The film, unlike James Cameron’s seemingly endless run of “Avatar” sequels, didn’t fit with Disney’s plans. While it’s likely they will dust off the “Die Hard” brand at some point, it probably won’t be this version that comes to fruition.
