Disney just purchased the rest of your childhood

The original “Star Wars” trilogy. “Aliens”. “Predator”. “Die Hard”.”License to Drive”. “Less than Zero”. “Say Anything…”. “The Fly”. “Revenge of the Nerds”. Disney, why don’t you go the whole hog and snag the memories of my parents divorce and those turbulent teen years, you’ll then own my entire childhood.

Just as they magic-balled Donald Trump’s presidency, the creators of the animated TV smash “The Simpsons” once predicted a future – the episode aired in 1995 – in which the almighty Disney would gobble up Twentieth Century Fox.

Man, gonna have to go through every damn episode of that show now to see what awaits for us all down the line.

With a sprinkle of Pixel dust, Disney’s bid to buy much of 21st Century Pictures was sealed, stamped and sent off to the movie governor today, setting the House of Mouse back a sumly $52.4 billion.

The deal sees Disney acquire Fox’s venerable movie studio and the bulk of its other entertainment assets, including streaming service Hulu.

Of most interest to movie buffs is that a number of huge properties now port over to Disney – “Avatar” and it’s upcoming sequels, the back-catalogue of “Star Wars”, “Predator”, “Aliens”, “Home Alone”, “Planet of the Apes” and its sequels, The “Ice Age” franchise, as well as TV juggernaut “The Simpsons”. Marvel fans are of course pants-wet excited at the probability of Deadpool, Fantastic Four and the X-Men linking up with the MCU. The deal with Fox means Disney/Marvel Studios can now use those characters in current superhero franchises like “Avengers”… or pretty much any way they want to.

Some were concerned that upcoming Fox-produced superhero fare like “Deadpool 2”, which was gunning for an R-rating, would be edited and watered down for release under their new home but CEO Bob Iger has assured both filmmaker and fan that they intend to release that film with the ‘R’ in-tact.

“It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool,” said Iger. “As long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine.”

It’s expected that Disney will likely resurrect many of Fox’s dormant family properties, including “Doctor Dolittle”, “Night at the Museum”, “Alvin & The Chipmunks” and “The Sandlot”.
