Disney prepping Aladdin sequel!?

While Sony attempt to court captain box-office for a new “Men in Black” (no surprise, really, considering the numbers the spin-off did), Disney too might be soon making calls to Will Smith’s agent to lock him down for a sequel.

Dan Lin, producer of this year’s surprisingly solid and fundamentally so well-performing live-action “Aladdin” tells ComicBookMovie there have been discussions with Mouseland about doing a follow-up.

Needless to say, if it goes ahead – they’ll want Smith back as the Genie. Thing is, Smith – who famously passed on the “Independence Day” sequel – isn’t too hot on sequels, so they might have to dangle a juicy carrot in front of him.

“We certainly when we first made the movie wanted to just make the best movie we could and let audiences tell us if they wanted to see more. And I would say resoundingly audiences want to see more. They’ve watched this movie multiple times. We have lots of fan letters about people who really go back and they bring their friends and bring their family. And so we feel like there’s more story to tell. We are going to treat it the same way we treat the original Aladdin movie and not going to do a shot by shot remake of anything that’s been done before. We’re really looking at what’s been done before in the past and the home video, and there’s just more story to tell with the underlying materials. So without giving away too much, we are certainly exploring where we can go with this franchise.”

No word on what form an “Aladdin” sequel could take but I suppose it’s possible it could be a live-action take on “Return of Jafar”, the 1994 direct-to-video sequel – but geez, they’d want to flesh that thin libretto out to something more substantial wouldn’t they!?
