Doctor Who joins Doctor Morbius

Fastly becoming a go-to for rogue roles in these pricey fantasy blockbusters, former Doctor Who Matt Smith (“Terminator Genisys”, “Star Wars Episode IX”) is Tardis-porting to the Sony backlot for his next gig.

The versatile thesp, fresh from his raved-about turn on “The Crown”, is in talks to co-star in the next “Spider-Man” spin-off film “Morbius”. Jared Leto will play the title role, which suggests the BBC alum might play the villain. Sony haven’t commented.

Daniel Espinosa helms the film, which sees Leto’s Dr. Michael Morbius try to cure himself of a blood disease, with tragic results. He became afflicted with vampiric traits such as fangs and a thirst for blood. In the comics, he wound up battling Spider-Man.

Like recent “Spider-Man” spin-off “Venom”, which pocketed a swish 855.8 million, it’s rumored that the Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless written script will feature Mobius as more of an anti-hero type, as opposed to out-and-out villain.
