“Space Jam 2” is coming along slowly – with the current state of the world throwing the movie biz into understandable chaos – but some new news is surfacing that Don Cheadle (“Trainwreck”) will play the villain in the upcoming sequel! Cheadle has been attached to the project since mid last year, but this is the first word of his potential role.
“Space Jam 2” has LeBron James in the lead role, with Ryan Coogler set to produce. Terence Nance is directing. Sonequa Martin-Green (“Star Trek : Discovery”) and Paul Scheer (“Veep”) are on board to star, with the latter talking to The Athletic Podcast and revealing the word about Cheadle’s role:
“Actually Don Cheadle, who I do ‘Black Monday’ with, he’s the bad guy in ‘Space Jam,’ and he said LeBron’s really great. He was great in ‘Trainwreck’ too.”
What that exactly entails remains to be seen, but one would guess he could be playing in the opposing team to James – MonStars cartoon alien basketball team – or else their manager, who was played by Danny Devito in the original “Space Jam”.
“Space Jam 2” is bouncing into theatres July 2021 – but that’s of course subject to what happens over the course of the next 6 months or so I would imagine.
