Exclusive : Zombieland 3D!?

Fret not Zombieland fans! Despite rumours piracy had stunted progress on the much-hankered-for sequel, seems there’s actually quite a – excuse the cheesy pun – bit of life left in the franchise yet!

I had the chance to chat to “Zombieland” director Ruben Fleischer yesterday, who confirmed Sony are very interested in a “Zombieland” sequel. And he’s ready to go. The original cast – Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone & Abigail Breslin – are also ready to slap another coffin dodger with the, er, ‘rule’ book. In other words, unless the events of “2012” come true… we’ll be seeing a sequel in a couple of years.

But the most interesting development? Fleischer says the next film will likely be 3-D – yep, mother-hopping three-dimensional Woody vs. Zombie action!!

Believing “the genre really lends itself to [3-D]”, and convinced – via what we’re hearing and seeing of “Avatar” – the technology is now there, Fleischer’s very keen to throw a few zombie gizzards in our direction. “Dead” cool, right!?

(As for where the sequel will be set, Fleischer didn’t say, but when we chatted to Woody Harrelson a few weeks back he said he’d like to see it either set in Paris… or on Broadway. Assuming it’ll be none of those locations– but somewhere just as surprising).

So when will “Zombieland 3D” happen? Whenever “we crack it”, says the filmmaker, indicating that they haven’t decided on the storyline yet.

Before then, Fleischer says he wouldn’t mind doing a romantic comedy – one without decaying lead characters.

It might still be a couple of years before we see “Zombieland 2”, but there’s another 3-D Zombie movie due out before then – the Patrick ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ Lussier helmed “Condition Dead 3D”. Though in terms of tone, our (I’m a producer) film’s apples to Zombieland’s oranges – “CD”essentially Cameron’s “Aliens” with the most ferocious bloody zombies you’ll ever have seen; not comical – I’m certain you’ll love it just as much as Fleischer’s fun flick. More on “CD” soon.
