Fifty Shades sets box office records

Just because we haven’t all heard enough about “50 Shades” over the past few weeks, here’s a box office update and, shock horror, the Universal bondage film has dominated, so to speak.

Since it was released on Feb 11, “50 Shades of Grey” has so far raked in a whopping $240 million at the world wide box office. In the States, the film earned $81.7 million while internationally it picked up another $158 million.

And bear in mind the film cost only $40 million to make…

Those figures make it the biggest international opening for an R rated film ever and the biggest international opening of any film so far this year. Second only to “Fast & Furious 6”, “50 Shades” is also Universal’s second biggest opening ever.

“50 Shades of Grey” is of course an adaptation of E.L. James’ hit novel. Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, the film stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan.
