First look at Keanu Reeves back as Neo in The Matrix 4

Filming on “The Matrix 4” has kicked off in San Francisco (not Australia, home of the original trilogy – which is odd. hmm… fess, Aussie government!) with quick-foooted members of the pap already fresh from their dark rooms with set pics.

Keanu Reeves, looking very un-Neo like but very Keanu-like, is pictured, along with his co-star from the original Wachowski-siblings trilogy, Carrie-Anne Moss. The pics were taken at the Chinatown section of the Bay Area.

If I had to guess, based on the pics and the minimal intel on hand, Reeves’ role in the film won’t be huge. If anything, I believe he’ll be playing the equivalent of, say, Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker in the recent “Star Wars” sequel trilogy – a former great (thought ‘dead’), now living a very different life than the one he lived in the previous films, who sets another like him on his or her path. Though tentatively titled “The Matrix 4”, I suspect this will be more of a reboot – with a new generation of stars – that leads into, ideally, a new trilogy.

The film, directed by Lana Wachowski,  will also feature another “Matrix” staple Jada Pinkett Smith, who debuted in “The Matrix Reloaded.” Newcomers to the series include Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, and Eréndira Ibarr.

Abdul-Mateen II (“Aquaman”) is tipped to be playing the young Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne’s character in the original series).
