It’s been a long time coming – but thanks to an exclusive reveal over at Vanity Fair, we have our first look at Timothée Chalamet as the Muad’dib himself in director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune.
Frank Herbert’s science fiction epic novel Dune was released in 1965, and has since become not only a beloved classic of the genre but the subject of multiple attempts to successfully adapt it to the big screen. In Herbert’s novel, the young Paul Atreides and his royal family are pulled into a galactic battle for control of the planet Arrakis, the only known source of a natural resource and drug called Spice which fuels the galactic economy and is said to grant psychic abilities to its users. Oh, and there are giant sand worms.
David Lynch was famously dissatisfied with the final cut of his 1984 film adaptation (which starred Kyle MacLachlan in the leading role), divorcing himself from the project after its release and effectively killing his desire to work on Hollywood blockbusters ever again. Despite its failure, it still has a cult following.
Alejandro Jodorowsky had an ever tougher time with his own adaptation, which infamously crumbled during pre-production despite an absolutely incredible creative team behind it – thankfully, we did get a fantastic documentary chronicling the film’s demise in 2013.
Things are looking much more promising for the latest adaptation by French-Canadian director Denis Villenueve, whose experience on sci-fi features Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 make him more than qualified for the job.
Villeneuve has a crack team assembled to bring Dune to life again, with a cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling, Dave Bautista, David Dastmalchian, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Chang Chen. Hans Zimmer will rejoin Villeneuve to provide the film’s score as he did for Blade Runner 2049.
At the time of writing, Dune is still scheduled for December 18th 2020.
