Hollywood Blvd was doused in more flabby, coin-sucking dudes dressed as Spider-Man tonight with Jimmy Kimmel pulling out all the stops in an effort to bring attention to the fact his late night talk show was premiering the first trailer for the new “Spider-Man” movie. This one, the third cinematic reboot, stars Tom Hollander (remember “In the Heart of the Sea”? No, me either) as the web-slinger, Michael Keaton (or ‘Keats’ as Jack Nicholson reportedly called him on the set of 1989’s “Batman”), Robert Downey Jr (now the Obi-wan of the Marvel universe, it seems) as Tony Stark aka Iron Man, Marisa ‘I’m not giving back the Oscar’ Tomei as Aunt May, with Logan Marshall-Green (wasn’t he on “the OC” at one stage?) and Zendaya (bless you) as back-up. Jon Watts directs. The film, which looks like it combines the original source material (those comics, of course) with the same mix of action and comedy seen in “Fantastic Four”, or to quote something a bit more solid, “Ant-Man”, opens next July.

Meantime, USA Today caught with Hollander ahead of the trailer(s) premiere who described the movie as “more a character piece about this kid who’s struggling to talk to girls and also struggling to save the city… This is really a movie where Spider-Man’s not the finished article. He really does learn and he makes massive mistakes. It’s nice to see a kid do that and then try to rectify those mistakes.”
Holland says Keaton’s entrance is a doozie. “The first time we see the Vulture is terrifying. It’s like a horror movie: really scary, very intense and shocking.” Director Jon Watts adds: “It’s fun to think that if Spider-Man is a regular kid who becomes a superhero, there’s got to be a bunch of regular guys who become supervillains, too.”
A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
