Fox may abandon Alien : Covenant sequels

A trade scoop may have offered a tiny glimmer of hope for Neil Blomkamp’s “Alien 5” proposal.

THR says Fox are reportedly “reassessing” the “Alien” franchise after Ridley Scott’s “Alien Covenant” failed to chalk up decent box office receipts. If true, the studio might be open to new, non-Scott related ideas in an effort to salvage the brand.

While the final act of this year’s “Alien Covenant” set up a sequel – with Scott himself having reportedly mapped out even more than just the one sequel – Fox mightn’t push ahead with it. The studio, says the trade, will deliberate while Scott shoots his new film, crime thriller “All The Money In The World” with Mark Wahlberg and Kevin Spacey.

“District 9” helmer Neil Blomkamp had approached the studio with an idea he had for a direct sequel to “Aliens”, one which would’ve brought back fan-faves Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and Hicks (Michael Biehn). While the project was said to be DOA, due to Scott’s determination to only have his “Prometheus”/”Covenant” world explored on screen, this about-turn from Fox could see the shingle taking another look at that other, admittedly quite exciting idea.
