Galactica, Bell, Punky, Office reboots for NBC’s Peacock

A [yes, another] reboot of sci-fi classic “Battlestar Galactica” is in the works for NBC’s newly-announced streaming platform Peacock, it was announced today.

In addition, new takes on “Punky Brewster”, “Saved By The Bell” and – possibly – “The Office” are coming to the spin-off.

Sam Esmail (“Mr Robot”) will spearhead the new “Galactica”, launching in 2020, and promises it won’t be a retread of the original Glen Larsen series nor the more recent, critically acclaimed Ronald D.Moore version.

Says the showrunner in a tweet, “BSG fans (he tweeted), this will NOT be a remake of the amazing series @RonDMoore launched because … why mess with perfection? Instead, we’ll explore a new story within the mythology while staying true to the spirit of Battlestar. So say we all!”

Peacock will also be the home for Moore and SyFy’s 2004 version.

The new “Galactica” is said to be a “more modern look at the world as told through the lens of the sci-fi favorite”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

A writer has yet to be hired for the this third go-round of the popular ’70s sci-fi series.
Also headed for Peacock, a “Saved By The Bell” sequel featuring Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkeley, and a “Punky Brewster” revival starring Soleil Moon-Frye.

“30 Rock’s Tracey Wigfield is writing and executive producing the “Saved” sequel, which The Hollywood Reporter has discovered will also feature Zack Morris – albeit in a surprising new role.

“When California Gov. Zack Morris (the role memorably played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar) gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools, he proposes they send the affected students to the highest performing schools in the state – including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the over privileged Bayside kids a much needed and hilarious dose of reality.”

In the “Punky” follow-up, the former foster kid will become a foster parent herself.
“In this multicamera/hybrid continuation of the iconic ’80s sitcom about a bright young girl raised by a foster dad, Punky is now a single mother of three trying to get her life back on track when she meets a young girl who reminds her a lot of her younger self. Soleil Moon Frye reprises the role that made her famous.”
Meanwhile, a reboot of “The Office” remains a high priority for the network.
“It is my hope and goal that we do an Office reboot,” NBCU’s Bonnie Hammer, Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprises, told Deadline.
NBCU recently acquired streaming rights to NBC’s the series for $500+ million, taking it away from Netflix where the series starring Carell has flourished. “The Office comes back to us in January 2021. It is my hope that we can figure what that great reboot would be,” Hammer said, adding, “We are having conversations.”
The newly-announced “Peacock” will launch in April.
