It’s no big scoop to say I’ve heard whispers that Warners are already considering sequelizing Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy- with films set in the same Gotham Nolan crafted, albeit with different actors behind the masks, badges and butler garb – because, quite frankly why wouldn’t they be!? If there’s money to be made, a studio won’t be far away. And with Nolan’s Batman series easily the most popular and acclaimed of the film adaptations of the Batman comics (though Tim Burton’s two films are fairly delightful in my opinion) it’s no shock that the WB doesn’t want to hang onto some of that – even if Nolan, Christian Bale and much of the cast of “Batman Begins”, “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises” will have moved on. And Gary Oldman is now predicting as much too – a couple more “Batman” films, set in the Batman universe that Chris built, but with the filmmaker merely producing.
Speaking to Crave Online, the actor behind Commissioner Gordon’s bulletproof vest says he won’t be back to play Gordon for a fourth of fifth “Batman” film, but he does believe the films will get done anyway.
Does ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ feel like an ending, doing the last entry of this incarnation of Batman?
Yeah, yeah. For us I think it’s the end. Whether they will make more, my guess is probably. I mean, they don’t have Potter anymore. So, there could be a Batman 4 a 5. It may be Chris overseeing it in a produce-rial position, but for us and for Chris I think that’s it. It’s a great way to go out though. It’s a great story. Epic, epic thing it is.
That’s the important thing, that it’s really about the story.
I think Chris strikes me as someone who’s too smart and he’s sort of too classy to just sort of make a third for the sake of making it. I don’t think that’s who he is. I remember way back saying to him, ‘”Is there going to be a third?” He said, “If I can get the story right. I’ve got to outdo myself. I’ve got to do it better than The Dark Knight. I’ve just got to get it right.” He set the bar very high, and so he said, “If I can find a story that interests me I will do it.” I think also it’s genius that he’s picked Bane as the villain, that he didn’t go with The Riddler or The Penguin. I think right there is a wise choice.
You know, I’m not so much sad that they didn’t use The Riddler or The Penguin in one of Nolan’s Batman films, I’m disappointed that Nolan didn’t find something for his “Insomnia” star Robin Williams to do. Williams makes a wonderful villain and he’d have been terrific in any of the rogue parts on offer, but I guess The Penguin would’ve been tailor-made. Maybe “Dark Knight Rises then Rises Again”, directed by McG, can see about snagging Williams?
