Gladiator sequel moving forwards with Ridley Scott

Ridley Scott is beginning work on “Gladiator 2”, the follow up to 2000’s “Gladiator” starring Russell Crowe. The film was a massive success, gathering 11 Oscar nominations and 5 wins – so a follow-up has been long awaited for.

If you’ve seen the film, you’ll know that Crowe’s character met his demise at the end of the film (it’s been 18 years peeps, no spoiler warnings any more), so “Gladiator 2” will follow the continuing story of Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). The youth was the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the weaselly son of Roman leader Marcus Aurelius who murdered his father seized the throne and wound up in the gladiator ring with Maximus, who though mortally wounded, skewered the emperor before fading into the great beyond to reunite with his slain wife and son. Maximus saved the boy and his mother while avenging his own family, and left a strong impression on the young Lucius (via Deadline).

Scott looks set to direct the film, with Peter Craig (whose credits include “12 Strong”, “Top Gun: Maverick” and two “Hunger Games” flicks – to name but a few) being assigned script-writing duties.
