A long-gestating “Star Trek” sequel set to unite Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk with onscreen pop George Kirk (Hemsworth in the 2009 film) seems to be indefinitely off-the-cards.
“Thor” star Hemsworth, who was expected to reprise his role as the ‘late’ captain, hints that the proposal has fallen on deaf ears. After a salary dispute prompted both Pine and Hemsworth to depart ship – so to speak – the project hasn’t been able to beam either actor back aboard.
“I didn’t feel like we landed on a reason to revisit that yet”, the Australian actor tells Variety. “I didn’t want to be underwhelmed by what I was going to bring to the table.”
The idea now goes back into mothballs, while a Quentin Tarantino-proposed “Trek” continues to be discussed.
In regards to whether he’ll reprise Thor again, Hemsworth is open to the idea but suggests if we do see the almighty one again he’ll be a different cat to the one that first climbed into the MCU litter waybackwhen.
“I’d still love to do more, to be honest. And I don’t know what the plan is. I feel like we’ve opened up such a different character. I feel more energized for the possibility of where it could go… But I’ll use that in other places and other characters if it’s the end here.”
