Iron Giant 2 on the way!?

A post on Vin Diesel’s Facebook page suggests that Warner Bros might be readying a sequel to the 2000 boy-befriends-bot classic.

Brad Bird directed the original, an animated adaptation of Ted Hughes’ Cold War fable about a giant alien robot (Vin Diesel pre-“Fast and the Furious” fame) who crash-lands near the small town of Rockwell, Maine, in 1957. Exploring the area, a local 9-year-old boy, Hogarth, discovers the robot, and soon forms an unlikely friendship with him. When a paranoid government agent, Kent Mansley, becomes determined to destroy the robot, Hogarth and beatnik Dean McCoppin (Harry Connick Jr.) must do what they can to save the misunderstood machine. Jennifer Aniston, Christopher McDonald and Eli Marienthal provided the voices of the mains.

The film was a reasonable success theatrically but really earned it’s keep on home video.

Sure, Diesel could simply be speculating but surely he knows we’re only going to get excited about a possible follow-up to one of the warmest, most enjoyable family films in recent years!? Diesel has used his Facebook page to make big announcements before though – with, one would assume, the studio’s blessing – so this could be one of those occasions.

Here’s Diesel’s original post :

I have been very lucky to have played so many interesting characters… one of the first and one of my favorites is… the Iron Giant.P.s. Don't be surprised when you hear WB announce the sequel.
