While Kelly McGillis mightn’t have been asked to reprise her role from the classic Tony Scott actioner, a new interview with acclaimed actor Tom Skerritt suggests the upcoming “Top Gun : Maverick” may feature his character from the ’86 film.
Speaking to Australia’s The Morning Show, the “Alien” and “Picket Fences” star remained tight-lipped about the sequel to the flyboy classic but hinted that his character – Viper – may make an appearance in the movie.
“’I can’t tell you anything about it”, the 85 year-old actor said, holding back a smile. “there’s a trailer out that is going to bring in a lot of ticket sales. It’s almost a virtual reality experience to watch the trailer. They’re not talking much about it. Tom also likes to say, ‘If I tell you, I’ll kill you!’”
We were at San Diego Comic-Con a few weeks back when Cruise surprised attendees with the first trailer for “Top Gun : Maverick”.
There was no sign of Mike “Viper” Metcalf in the very-impressive trailer – but there was (just speculating…) a quick shot of a funeral. Who’s in the box? As Skerrit said, Cruise has kept a tight-lid on the guts of the story here, so just throwing ideas at the wind.
In addition to Cruise, returning as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, it’s been confirmed that Val Kilmer will reprise his role as friendly competition ‘Iceman’ in the summer 2020 release.
With Kilmer back, and if Skerritt is in the film, might some other favourites from the original make surprise appearances in the new film? Maybe Meg Ryan, as Goose’s widow? How about Michael Ironside’s Jester? James Tolan’s unforgettable Stinger? heck, maybe Rick Rossovich was thrown a bone to reprise Slider?
