“Child’s Play” is reportedly getting a modern-day remake at MGM, rebooting the 1988 horror classic. Lars Klevberg is on board to direct from a script by Tyler Burton-Smith, and “IT” producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith will produce via KatzSmith Productions.
Collider reports that production for the flick is set to begin in Vancouver in September, and as yet plot details are unknown – however they note that “it’s a contemporary reboot involving a group of kids (a la “Stranger Things”), and a technologically-advanced doll that enters their world. That’s right, this doll will be able to do some cool stuff that may have been beyond Chucky 1.0’s grasp. It’s likely that the new doll will be named Chucky, though it’s possible that the doll will have a new name.”
Interesting that they should mention that the doll mightn’t even be called ‘Chucky’ in the new film. Ya see, MGM only owns the rights to the very first ‘Chucky’ movie, so it’s likely this flick will have to border more on complete ‘remake’ – right down to the look of the doll, name of the doll, and other elements.
Somewhat disrespectfully, the studio pushes on with a remake while series creator Don Mancini pushes forward with the still-popular ‘original’ franchise – in addition to several recent direct-to-disc sequels, he has a “Chucky” TV series on the way.
